I hope someone can help me, I'm tearing my hair out!

I have bought a second-hand Portege M100 (model number PPM10E) and am having serious problems installing the wireless mini-pci adapter that came with it.

When I turn on the wireless via the switch on the front, the light on the lid comes up amber.

Windows XP (Pro, SP1 and SP2 update) cannot see the device. Device Manager recognises 2 devices with problems: "Network Controller" and "Other Device".

I have downloaded all listed drivers for this model, and installed them (or tried to!) in the order specified in the Installation Instructions file (from the same Toshiba download drivers page for this model).

I have also installed Everest Home Edition, and it sees the wireless adapter, and tells me it's an Intel 2200 BG.

I have tried to acquire updated drivers from Intel and from driverguide.com but none of these will take, either - not even on a clean install, substituting them for the Toshiba-supplied driver.

The wireless card works perfectly in a Fujitsu Lifebook, also running Win XP Pro - so I'm assuming there's some software/hardware conflict with this Toshiba laptop!

I have tried to "update driver" on the 2 problem devices 1) by pointing them (via Device Manager / update driver) at every (unzipped) downloaded set of files. No joy. 2) connecting to my router via ethernet cable and allowing Windows to search online for drivers. No joy there either.

When I try to run the Atheros Client Utility OR Config Free (again, from the official Toshiba download page for this laptop), they don't find any wireless adapter on the system.

Can anyone give me any tips on what to do next? I specifically bought this machine because I need to use wireless.

Thanks in advance (and in hope!)

Teddy
