    So, I was bored ...

It's fall... a grey & rainy day... ahhh the joy! So, out into the garage to clean up and trash some old computer parts. Understand, I've been at it for years... I have so many old computer parts, shells of their former selves! Some are old fried clients systems, some are mine from years back...

So I'm going through this box full of wires, PCI and AGP cards and other insundry pieces..... lo & behold... an old motherboard with CPU & RAM still there, how about that! It's my old Pentium Pro 200mhz board and processor! Which I had upgraded back in the day with a PII 333mhz overdrive... that ran $500+ back in the day!!! Ouch ... so, figured it might not be a bad idea to try and get a little more out of that investment!!! And see if it might actually fire up...

So, new project... forget the garage! It'll be there as winter progresses... Snagged an old case & 200w PS ... an old Voodoo3 2000 card that's been knockin' around here for a bit and an ethernet card. Dug around and found a CD-ROM and floppy drive and set to go! Now to put it all together ...

Took some time to jerry-rig it all together, most notably getting all the gunk out of the HSF, then came the moment of truth! Press the power button and....... oh my god! IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually fired up after all these years of knockin' around in a box of parts and pieces!!! Had a spare copy of Win98se that's no longer in use so loaded her up and runnin' like a champ! So, looks like a file server for the network here is born!

    Just thought I'd share....

It's my old Pentium Pro 200mhz board and processor!
I can remember when that setup was a milestone in home pc history. 200 mhz, what is the world coming to? I had a couple of freinds that ran right out and bought these systems for just under two grand. They where my home pc heros

Throw a ATA card in it, add a couple large hdds and yep, you have your file/backup server.

I use a old server mobo with 2 350MHZ P2s and a gigabit nic. Used W2K pro for the OS.

You could also install either Smoothwall or SME Server and use it for a firewall/server its ideal as its a low power usage and it doesn't need a fast processor to run either.Unless you want to try a Linux variant theres plenty to have a go at.

rbc1100 ... yeah, back then we really thought we were doing something !!! ;-) By the way, the $500+ I mentioned was just for the overdrive processor... and the only PPro upgrade available! The original system ran right around 2 grand ... and if memory serves it had an S3 Virge 8meg video card with an 8meg daughter card for a grand total of 16meg. Man, was I rockin'! ;-)

Train... Now that I think of it ... I have an unused copy of Win2k around here too. Yeah, need to load that... more stable and better support overall.

104456... I tried to load Fedora Core 4 on there first and it didn't like it... kept getting some odd error that just killed the install.
