i have a sony vaio, where's my windows xp cd?
I am trying to access the win xp recovery console because my mbr is messed up and I have to use a boot disk to start windows. All places say that I need to use the "windows xp" cd to access the recovery console. The problem is, I have a sony vaio and I have the system recovery cds (3 of them). But none of them are specified as the windows xp cd and there is no option to access the recovery console from the sony system recovery cds. What do i do?

Have a look on the CD's and see if there is an i386 folder on one of them. Post back if there is and I'll tell you what you need to do to install the RC.

Insert the disc with the i386 folder into the CD-ROM drive, and then go to Start|Run|type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons (where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive, change as applicable) A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears and describes the Recovery Console option to confirm the installation, click Yes, restart the computer. The next time that you start your computer, "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" appears on the startup menu.
