Setting up a VPN - Project
Hi all
Thought I would expand my knowledge in Linux/Networking/VPN by trying a little project out, just wanted to see if you guys have any suggestions.
Setup:
Home PC (Linux) - Router - Internet - Office
I would like to be able to VPN in to my home pc from the office. Simple.
Router doesnt have built-in VPN capabilities.
I was thinking the best way to do this is to install some VPN Server software onto my Linux box, one I came across was OpenVPN. Setup Port Forwarding on the router to point port xxx to my LAN IP, then in theory I should be able to find some VPN Client software, tap in my home's external IP and reach my linux box right? Hence then I should be able to ping my other LAN devices, etc.
Any suggestions on any part appreciated!
Hong

Yep, you've got the jist of everything there. Just keep in mind that on the return end (your office), you may need to open additional ports on that firewall to your IP inside of the office as well. The established connection is in both directions.
Also, for additional security, it would behoove you to allow port forwarding on the ports for your VPN from ONLY the IP Address coming from your office. Depending on your router/firewall, this may or may not be possible.

I do believe that it is possible to restrict only to a (or a range of) IP.
Lets see how I get on.
Thanks
