Hi JJ, yes I would say it's the cheap mic, if you have a Radio Shack in your area you might go there & see if they have a better quality one. Thier prices are pretty reasonable. A headphone mic combination works really well with things like Skype. BJ

my god are computers expensive. i seem to have to replace everything, lol. well i suppose i will get a new one then, but i don't think radio shack exist in the UK . I’ll buy it when i can be forced to part with the cash, even if it isn't that much.

So. The volume control that's built into windows doesn't help?

cheap microphones will not reproduce the exact sound of your voice very well. There are many factors to take into consideration .... something a more expensive microphone will do for you.
I'm willing to bet moving the mic closer to your mouth will solve the problem. Perhaps speaking a bit louder too.
If you experience feedback, that is the loop of your voice coming out of your speakers and going back into the microphone .... setup and direction can fix that.

Radio Shack used to exist over here (except they were called Tandy). They seem to have all gone now It's a shame they had some good stuff.
Amazon do a nice selection of headsets, they would be better for Internet telephony than a seaparate mic anyway:

well i have messed around with the settings a bit and turned that 20db boost on. I think it may have helped but i will need to test it first. I’ll tell you if it fixed it.
