    DVD-ROM's not acting right...

Machine in question is in the sig below... the problem is the the dvd roms, have an HP640i (dvd writer) and a Plextor PX116a (dvd reader).
Recently did a fresh install of WinXP Pro for other reasons ... all is good with the system and OS at this point. Both ROM's work except for one important point... they do not refresh when a new disk is inserted.

Normally, say you have my computer open, insert a CD and it'll sense it and generally change the icon. No way here... when you double click the drive, it'll come up and show the contents. Great, it works but not really.... say you pull that CD and put in another .... d-click it now and you'll see the contents of the previous CD, not the current one.... joy eh?

So, if you try and play a game that requires a CD, forget it... it isn't seen!
Or you try and install a game that has two CD, or more... when it asks for the next CD you put it in and click OK.... no way man, put in the CD!!!

All drivers/firmware are current ... all devices are correct and proper ... not a clue what's going on with this thing..... used the system file checker several times to no avail..... quite odd.

So, first order is to replace the cable on the off chance that there is a twitch there. Will do that after I post this if for nothing else than to rule it out. If that's not it I'd hope there's an idea here short of reloading the OS ... which is really the only other thing I can think of at this point as I've tried most everything else! ;-) Need some fresh ideas here! thx in advance.....

Same problem after right-clicking the drive and selecting "Eject" (in Windows Explorer)?

You have removed the cd devices in Device Manager and rebooted ?

o me it sounds like the drivers are corrupt!

Right-click then Eject from the menu will eject the CD ... no worries there.

Drivers be fine, be it for the motherboard or the drives... etc. etc. etc.

Believe it's an application that may be causing the behavior ... oh, by the by, it's a fresh XP Pro install now.

Right-click then Eject from the menu will eject the CD ... no worries there.
And then, after doing that, will inserting a different CD still produce a listing of the prior CD?

How about after ejecting but before inserting a new CD, press [Ctrl-C]?

Yeah, have tried all sorts of combinations of odd little things ... ! Quite frustrating... here's a little blurb I got from the folks whose software I suspect as being the issue...

This is a very rare problem that can sometimes be caused by the
installation of BlindWrite (there are other causes like a Windows
issue), normally if it is caused by BlindWrite the problem will clear
itself in a few days. You can also try doing several reboots in a row
with and without a CD in the drive as this may also clear it.

So, I'll try the reboot thing as they suggest ... and will continue to query them and see if they can come up with a more specific solution.
