No Option to Open File Upon Clicking on Link

    I'm using IE6 on WinXP.

I actually had 2 problems, but was able to at least solve one of them on my own...

Whenever I was clicking on a link to view an mpg or mpeg, Quicktime would just automatically open and play the clip within the browser. I only want Quicktime to handle .mov files, and I wanted Windows Media 10 to open up the mpg, mpegs, wma, etc. instead. I figured out that I had to uncheck a box in the Browser plugin/ MIME settings window to prevent Quicktime from opening them. That worked out fine, but now here's my problem...

Now when I click on a link to view one of those file types, I don't get the option to "open" the file at the prompt. I only have the option to save it, or cancel the download. The message says "The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type." After saving to the hard drive, then opening it, the file was not corrupted, and it was the correct file type. This has happened on a few sites, so I know something is up.

I've tried going into the IE security settings and disabling the option to have the browser "open files based on content, not file extention", and this did not work. I've also made sure that mpg, mpeg, etc. are associated with Media Player in the File Types tab under "Folder Options" for XP.

So does anyone know how to get the "open" option back, or even better, have the browser automatically launch Media Player 10 when I click on one of these media links? Thanks!

Since you have already checked in the Folder Options of XP, also check in WMP 10 options your file associations.

Open WMP first, then click File|Open URL and browse to URL of file you want to open.

    Thanks for the replies.

Vaibhavkapoor: I have already checked my file associations in WMP and they are set correctly, plus I checked to make sure Quicktime or any other program isn't associated with those file types.

Welshjim: I realize that may be a way around it, however, there was a time when I could just click on a link and WMP would automatically open the file. This is what I am trying to achieve.

I could not get these options on my PC, I am having the latest security updates, probably Microsoft has patched this feature up.

    Not sure about it.
