Strange flashing icons

Turned my computer on this morning and saw a bunch of things very unusual.

- The computer was acting very slow
- Every time I started widnows explorer, all the icons on the explorer as well as on the desktop would start flashing, once every second, all the at same time. It seemed like there was a process running that is doing something. When I closed windows exploer, the flashing would. It would restart when I launch it back up.
- There is a NEW icon on the desktop that says "Search Results". I cannot delete this icon.

Finally installed NAV that I recently bought but has been lazy to do anything with it. Got the newest def files and ran a full scan. 50+ viruses found including nimda. Cleaned or quartined all of them.

The search results icon is still there on the desktop and the flashing still occurs when windows explorer is launched.

If any of this rings a bell, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know.

I forgot to mention that when the icons are flashing, the cpu resources are jumping up and down like crazy 100% to 1%. I have this zig zag in my task manager perfmon window

If NAV found that many viruses, you probably are chock-fulla mal/ad/ware as well.

Run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware Beta, and if those don't disinfect your system, download and run HIJACKTHIS and post the log in the appropriate forum for us.

I will do all of the things you have suggested and then post the hijackthis log in this thread if the problem persists. Thanks.

My machine has always been very clean. I run anti spyware software at least once a week. I never open any suspicious attachments. It was this one time yesterday when I installed a program I never should have. It was on an old cd from a friend.

I have not run the anti spyware software after running the NAV. I thought NAV has built-in anti spyware as well.

It's certainly worth a shot. If you need to post a HIJACKTHIS log however, there is a separate forum for it, don't post that log in this thread, it won't get the attention it needs.

Run these three removal programs first, after updating the definitions:

Spybot S & D

Adaware

Microsoft Windows Antispyware

Then unzip this program into its own permanent folder, run it and post the logfile in our Hijack This Logfile forum here:
