Nothing happens when those symbols/buttons are clicked.

When I say nothing happens I mean nothing in terms of the prior posts appearing or not. There is a change to some other screen areas showing at the page bottom. But nothing related to this particular issue.

when clicking the two arrows the bottom of the page comes up to the 'Topic Review" Bar.....and when clicking again the 'empty space' returns....but the posts are not there, just blank space.

    JP,

Just as an FYI I'm attaching a zip file that contains an example of the saved contents (code and such) that gets generted under IE 5.5 during a reply. If you unzip it (it will go to a folder called IE5.5Folder) and then run the internet shortcut in there in an IE 6 browser you will see exactly what we see (and have the code that is producing it, which is different than the code when IE6 is being used).

Yeah, I already know that thanks. That's not the issue. It's entirely appropriate and intentional that 5.5 should be served different code. The issue is what in this particular page is it choking on. If the browser sniffer was commented out, 5.5 might become unusable altogether.

Well as I said earlier on, if I capture (save) the same stuff from within an IE6 browser, then run that through an IE5 browser all is well/normal.

But you're looking at one page and one function. You don't know what else is functioning normally now that may break if that sniffer is removed. There are a hundred templates to this site, any one or several of which could malfunction as a result.

Understood, and not saying that isn't necessarily the case. I'm simply focusing on the portion of the code (in the case of both browsers) that gets generated that is effecting this.
