    using cd-rom restarts computer.

    I have a computer (p4, win2k, 80gig HD, 760 odd megs of RAM). Recently when i restart my computer if there is a cd in the drive it won't get past the applying security policy page. if I insert a cd while it is on, it restarts once the autorun kicks in. any ideas
    scanned for virii and worms numerous times and nothing.
    is the drive just kaput.

    thanks

    Do you have the CD drive set as the first boot device in your Bios? If so, change it to the Hard Drive.

    thanks for getting back to me so quickly. no the first boot is the HD, then CD. this one has me scratching my head. I haven't changed the CD because I wanted to check and see if anyone had similar trouble

    Hi!

    What software do you have associated with CDs? Is there anything running on startup to do with CDs - eg Roxio DirectCD, Nero InCD.
    Any other apps that could be looking at the CD drive and trying to autoplay it?

    Try booting to a Win98 startup disk that has CD drivers on. Can you then view the CD contents OK? That'll tell you whether the hardware is likely to be OK.

    Best wishes,

    Andrew

    okay here is the latest. I swapped out the CD and it worked fine for four days. Then the other day started with a blue screen Stop error and inaccessible boot device. I was able to get another machine and install the old HD as a slave. I got another HD and installed it in the original trouble machine and began to install win2k server. Just got to the loading screen about 10 seconds in and it restarted. I swapped different RAM (I have 3 - 256mb pc2100 DDR) The same thing happened with all so I am thinking MB problem. MB is Asus P4PE, and I have a P4 2.4 ghz processor. Is there anything special I should be looking at to try and get it working. I took out the battery and reset the BIOS as well.
    thanks for looking
