    Resolved [RESOLVED] Table in WORD97

An annoying nit using Tables in Word 97.

Sometimes I find that I can not see the right-hand edge of my my table. That is, the right-most column extends off the screen and I can not make it narrower by dragging the edge. What (probably simple thing) am I missing that will shrink the width of the right-most column? Changing margins doesn’t seem to do it. Thanks. … wdc

Try changing the page setup to landscape, you can change it back to portrait after you resize the table.

You can also get to the full width of the table, as well as change column widths, by changing the View to Normal. Normal view doesn't care about printed page size when it comes to showing you the document contents.

Another way that Normal view is helpful is if you mistakenly do something to paragraph formatting that causes the document to explode into dozens or hundreds of pages with very little on each page. Page/column breaks get replaced with a single marker line, which can make it easier to see whats gone wrong.

Hi prouton: Thanks for pointing out the capabilities of the View\Normal option – for this Table problem and for the other page numbering problem I reported in the General Business forum. “Normal” was just one of the many many Word options I had never looked at in any detail.

I wonder if I could also ask you to look at my recent post in Windows NT4 re Word on my NT4 laptop --- concerning excessive steps in exiting a file?

    <Question re WORD 97 SR-2 on a pc using NT-4 OS

When I exit after creating and saving a WORD file I get a series of annoying error messages, each of which forces me to respond. For example:

 First I get message: “Do you want to replace the existing Normal?” -- I click “No.”
 Next I get a SaveAs screen with “Templates” in the Save In: window. – I click “Cancel.”
 Then I get “Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you want to save these changes?” – I click “No.”
 Then, finally, I return to my desktop.

I do not get this sequence with WORD97 on my W98 pc.

How do I set up my NT-4 WORD 97 to eliminate these annoying and time-consuming messages?

    <Thank you. ….wdc

Do you see a way to eliminate all those messages? ….. wdc

    Hi wdc2020,

In Word, go to "Tools" in the menu bar and select "Options", then in the "Save" tab under "Save Word files as" make sure you have "Word Document (*.doc)" selected and your problem should be solved.

    Hope this helps.............

Hi John Stevens: Thanks for your help.

I’m sorry to say your suggestion did not fix my problem.

FWIW.. when I go to Tools\Options\Save I see these items checked: Allow fast save; Allow background save; Save AutoRecovery info every 10 minutes; Save Word files as Word 6.0\95(*.doc).

I still get the annoying messages when I exit Word. To restate my symptoms (maybe more clearly than I did before), here(attached screenshot) is what happens when I try to exit out of a document. (I hope I have attached it correctly and that it is visible.)... wdc

I fixed my Tools/Options/Save screen to match yours. But I still get these “odd” messages when I exit Word. To be specific, here is what happens when I open and then try to get out of a Word document:

    1. I click the Word icon on myDesktop, get a blank Word page, type a few letters. Then I click the X in the upper right corner to exit.

    2. I get a message: “Do you want to save the changes you made to Document 1?” – OK, I understand and expect that message.

    3. I enter NO and I get a blank Word page. – OK

    4. I click the X in the top right corner again, expecting to get back to my Desktop. But, instead, I get the message “Do you want to replace the existing Normal?”’ – ??? Why does this appear?

    5. I enter NO and then get a SaveAs screen with “Templates” in the the Save in window and about a dozen options in the main screen area (Binders, Legal Pleadings, Letters & Faxes, etc). At the bottom of the screen I see “Normal” in the File name window. --- Why does this appear? It does not appear when I use WORD97 on my desktop. Is NT4 Word different? What are these Templates anyway?

    6. I click CANCEL and get a blank Word page.

    7. I click the X in the upper right corner Again This time I get the message “Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you want to save these changes? -- ??? Why do I get this message? What “changes that affect the global template?” What is a global template, anyway?

    8. I click NO and, finally, get back to my Desktop.

My question: is there someway I can eliminate these “extraneous” messages (4,5, and 7)?

Thanks for your patience. …… wdc

Rename the Normal.dot file to OLDNormal.dot, then restart Word. A new Normal.dot will be created. Give that a try.

John (if I may): The plot becomes more mysterious!

Clicking Start\Find, I tried to find normal.dot in the root directory so that I could rename it, as you suggested. But I could not locate it at all.

FWIW (probably not much), this is what I find when I use my DOS command and do a DIR of the root directory.

I also specifically looked for normal.dot in C:\WINNT but could not it there either.

Can you see what I am doing wrong?

The reference site you mention seems very relevant and I will read it in detail. Thanks, thanks for your help. … wdc

try doing a search for "*.dot" (without the quotes)

I believe NT's path to Normal.dot would be:
    "C:\<Windows_Folder>\Profiles\USER_PROFILE\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot".

    W2K's path to Normal.dot is:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\USER_PROFILE\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot".

Try looking in the WINNT directory..........
