Perfume
I do onsite pc repair, homes & office ect.
I have been noticing that when I find a problem with connections
be it a ide cable or whatever a high % of the time it is in area where their is a strong smell of some type related to a cleaning agent or the candles that they burn ( smoke eaters ?) Or perhaps a home where they burn incense or what ever. The type of smell is different with different areas but I would call them all perfume or air cleaner smells. If I take a pc from these sites to shop I can smell the smell from where it came from even after cleaning the machine up some, remove dust ect, for several days with the machine running. I recently had a bad hard drive and as near as I could tell the smell was in the hard drive itself.
I am wondering if anyone else is experinceing this or if it is all in my head. Ed

When you think about it people use all sorts of perfume things in their houses, this must leave traces in the air which in turn is drawn into the computer. So I'd say that you could be right, you take of the cover of a smokers machine and it hits you straight away.
I seem to remember a few months ago they said on the news that air fresheners in peoples homes are actually making some people sick, so perhaps computers are also feeling the effects.

For the life of me I feel that I have way less problems in a autombile shop where dust and smoke carbon monxide from cars or from smokers is really bad than I do like in a doctors office where they seem to have the burning candles ect running or from a woman user who I know use a strong perfume in her home and doesn't smoke. IDE cables running to a CD or hard drive seem to be the worst or most often found , where I just replug them and they work. I have tried replacing cables at one shop but in like 3 weeks it is right back to same problem, Don't figure that it is the cable make but connectors on device.

I've found that computers from the homes of smokers have heat related problems. The tars and nicotine contained in the smoke gets sucked into the computer, mixes with dust and forms a layer over CPU's, fans and vents. Computers from homes of ladies that smoke are worse than men due to the perfume added to the mix.
The true test of character is not how much we
know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do
