I think Winzip will let you extract files from self-extracting exe's.

MaFia JaK--The key is whether it is a self extracting .exe file containing more than one file. In this case the icon often is that of a .zip file.
I do not think you can extract the "files" (if there even are any) from a regular .exe (application or setup file --icon looks like a TV screen or a special icon from the developer). I think this type of .exe file is only coded instructions which create the actual program files when you click on it. The .exe file in this case is only a single file until activated.
At least I have never been able to look inside the latter type of .exe file.
Of course, you have nothing to lose by trying to unzip.

If it's a proper executable file as opposed to a self extracting zip file then extracting part of it would be illegal, IMO, as it would be considered reverse engineering of code to get at part of it.

Sort of like extracting the underlying code of Windows for example.

whenever I download an installer of something that I dont need specifically installed, I drag it onto my winrar icon on Y'z dock and see it winrar can extract it or not..

it works sometimes, about 1/8 of the time; I ussually end up using the installer in the end if I like the software

Take a back up of your system.

install the boot screen via installer.

save just the boot screen part to a floppy or CD

restore your system from the back up.

load the boot screen from wherever you save it.

    a long way round but..........
