    Question isp logging

How long do isp's keep your web surfing logs? and exactly what do they use them for? Do all isp's log your serfing history? Can you stop an isp from logging your surfing? thanx

Deltree is correct, every ISP is different.

    A few generalizations:

    1. The storage required grows quickly so the number of days will be limited.

    2. The only value to the ISP is for problem research.

    3. There will be a record of each message at every network node (usually several) through which it passes. Again, storage capacity severly limits how long such records are kept.

    4. If the message exchange involved a financial or business transaction, records will be kept for years.

    5. If the message exchange is with another user (IMs, for example), records may also be kept for weeks and even if "erased" may be recoverable for months.
