File Conversion to NTFS

I have just purchased a second hand Laptop, Toshiba Satellite 5200 series, XP home edition. It has FAT32 file system. Partitioned as C and D drives. D drive is empty.
I wish to convert both drives into NTFS file system.
In command prompt after I write the necessary command it says,
“ Command can not run because the volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if the volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) _ “
Would you please tell me what to do next (in simple terms) please?

Press the Y key, then the Enter key.

When you convert drive C, it will tell you that the filesystem is un use and will be converted at the next reboot. When rebooted, you'll see the conversion process take place in text format and then the system will reboot a second time into Windows.

If the FAT32 partition was created using WinXP then go ahead and use convert. If it wasn't created by WinXP, or you're not sure, then read this article first to prevent Convert from creating 512byte clusters - it has an adverse effect on performance otherwise:

Rather than forcing a dismount, I normally always choose N, then allow it to do the conversion at the next reboot. You'll probably end up rebooting anyway just to placate whichever bit of software was holding D: in use at the time.
