Can't Get Java Applets to work

I can't seem to get any java applets to work. I think that the problem is somehow related to a Proxy Server whatever that is. For example, I try to do puzzles requiring java on Jigzone.com and it has a troubleshooting guide which includes a bubble simulation test...and i get a message: "alt="Your browser understands the <APPLET> tag but isn't running the applet, for some reason." Your browser is completely ignoring the <APPLET> tag!" I browse around their FAQs somemore and see something about configuring a proxy server or something.

I do know that I have Java downloaded, so I'm not sure where to start.

Hi.. first go to this website and see if it says your java is enabled/working.

That can tell us if java is working at other sites and globally enabled on your computer.

Here's another little test you can try.. it's a speed test that requires running a little java applet..

EDIT- just as a sidenote it's usually not a good idea to have your email address viewable like that. It could lead to spam. There are those that will crawl websites harvesting email addresses for advertising/spam lists. Your user information has a button to send you email if anyone here wants to do that and it keeps it private even if the email is sent.

I went to the first site you mentioned (privacy.net)...and I got some results:

"JavaScript is enabled and working"

"Your Browser Type and Operating System:"

"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" ALTHOUGH THIS ISN'T TRUE ...i have Internet Explorer and Windows XP

There are two White Boxes with red X's where I expect Java Applets to be

"Is JavaScript, VBScript, or JAVA enabled? Text will appear if these features are enabled."

"JavaScript is enabled and working.
VBScript is enabled and working."

That is all the relevant information i gathered from this site ( I think)

"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1" is what you'd expect to see... it's ok (MSIE 6 is IEX6 & NT5.1 is XP)

Why do you think it's a problem related to a proxy server? Are you using one? look in tools/internet options/connections/LAN settings to see if a proxy is enabled.

No i guess that I am not using a proxy server. I wasn't sure what it was. That jigzone website mentioned it in its help area.

Now my hunch is somehow the Java isn't installing properly or something, i have no idea what else could be wrong.
Could it be virus interference...I Do have Norton Antivirus and Internet Security running on my PC, But they haven't detected anything.

Have you tried reinstalling Java? Which one do you have? Microsofts or Sun's?

Hope y'all don't mind me jumping in here. I was searching for an answer to my problem and found this post that matched exactly - so I'm continuing it!! lol

I don't know what I've done (or undone) but suddenly I can't view java applications either... Just the empty box with a little red X in the corner. (Including the one at SpeakEasy)

I also went to Privacy.net and it says JavaScript and VBScript are enabled and working. It also says:

ShockWave Director Plug-in - SWCtl.SWCtl.1 is installed
ShockWave ActiveX Control Plug-in - SWCtl.SWCtl.7 is installed

Media Player - MediaPlayer.MediaPlayer.1 is installed
MS Agent 1.5 - Agent.Control.1 is installed
MS Agent 2.0 - Agent.Control.2 is installed
MS DirectAnimation Control - DirectAnimation.DirectAnimationIntegratedMediaControl.1 is installed

I don't guess that matters much though since the pictures right below it were also empty squares...

I do have a bunch of Sun Java stuff on my computer but explored the folders to try to start it (maybe I told it not to run on start-up?) but there are so many folders and applications etc. - and the only one that seemed to "run" when I clicked on it was a game thing called Java Web Start...

( I am soooo lost... lol)

I went to the Sun Java web page to try downloading it again but am not sure what I'm looking for. Seems most everything there is for developers - and that is NOT me! (Could you tell???)

So... Can anyone tell me what exactly I should look for on my computer - or on the Sun Java web site?

And if I have told the Java program not to run automatically on start-up, how can I fix that???

Okay, after reading numerous posts and pages, doing multiple disgnostic tests, checking and changing lots of settings - all to now avail - I finally found something to FIX this java problem!

I went to this page:

and downloaded the Microsoft Virtual Machine (whatever that is....) and that seems to have fixed it. - No more empty boxes with a little red X!! Yippee!!!!

Hope this helps someone else too as I see quite a few people are having the same problem.

- I just have to wonder "why"....
