Vcash
Windows ME, Del PC, 128MB Dimm memory, 2Gig hard Drive, nothing else special.
I also get a "Windows Protection Error" similar to another posting seen here. \
The difference is says, ... "while initializing device Vcache".
It will not start up normally, but I can get into safe mode.
I tried to restore to the last known working registry, but it said unable to determine the last good one. So I selected back three weeks when I was told it was working, and no change upon start up.
Any ideas how to repair this? thanks, Joe

RE: Troubleshooting
The safest best-bet is to let Windows handle your Viurtual Memory:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System. On the Performance tab, click Virtual Memory. Click 'Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings (Recommended)' and then click the OK button. Restart your computer when prompted.
***
Vcache is Windows 9x's disk-caching driver. Typically, Windows sets it too high (consuming memory and slowing applications) or too low (slowing drive responsiveness). You can take control of Vcache by running Sysedit (click Start; Run, type, sysedit in the Run box, click OK) and editing the System.ini file.
Find the heading [vcache]; beneath it will be minimum and maximum numbers, in kilobytes. A good rule of thumb is to set Vcache to one-quarter of the amount of physical memory within your PC, but setting it higher than 32MB is unnecessary. Set both the minimum and maximum numbers to the same value.

I apologise for stating something you already know.

Thanks great information. I saved it and printed out for future reference for when the situation comes up again.
In the meantime, I went to CMOS set up and set the machine to boot from the CD rom drive first.
I then put the win ME cd in and saved and exited and restarted.
Win ME setup started up and I just re-installed ME and everything was ok from then on. Guess this closes out this thread?
Thanks again, there is tons of real valuable info here with all you nice folks. Joe
