Critical up-date problem
I keep getting a notice that a critical up-date, something to do with video player, has been downloaded and ready to install. It says that it was successfully installed, but the very next day it will repeat itself. It has done this for over 6 times. Something has to be wrong. .... Window XP Home... HELP
Heard at a local auto-repair shop:
"I couldn't repair your brakes,
so I made your horn louder."

See if this looks like it's the problem. Microsoft says it could happen if the update that you installed didn't register correctly.

I had the same problem. One critical update has been downloaded over a dozen times and it keeps coming back again on automatic update. I finally turned automatic update off. I tried that link and M$ fix but doesn't work. When you go to registry link the update file number is not there. There must be a bug in this update file and M$ has not caught up with it yet. I can't get to M$ tech help. They want to charge you.

Hi bojovan
Firstly turn off "Automatic Updates" and then remember to check the Updates Site on a regular basis.
To me, it is better to download the update first and install it next. This way you ran save the updates (on CD-R, for example) and use them once again if necessary. To download the updates, do the following
1. Connect to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Check for available updates for your machine. Take note of the numbers you want.
2. On the left pane, click "Personalize Windows Update" under "Other Options"
3. On the next screen, check "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also" checkbox and click "Save Settings" button.
4. On the left pane, you will see the link you requested. Click on it.
5. On the next screen, click "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems"
6. On the next screen, choose your version of Windows, click "Search" button, etc.
For reasons known only to Microsoft, the Update Catalog doesn't list all available patches. But if you can't find a patch you need in the Catalog proper, you usually can find it via the "Search" link at the top of the Update Window: Enter the name or number of the patch you're seeking, and the search tool will usually bring you to a Knowledgebase discussion of that patch, which will contain a link to the actual download. As with the Update Catalog items themselves, don't run the files you download this way; just save them in a known location on the fast PC's hard drive.
