    compressed drive hangs after reboot

Why do people do things like this.

Somebody has compressed the entire C Drive.
The operation supposedly completed. Now after rebooting the PC asks for a network name & password. Once these are entered Drivespace comes back up and displays a mesage that 100% has been completed and the drive is being prepared.

At which point the PC hangs, C+A+D has no affect.

MS seem to suggest that this is pants and that the probable outcome is a reFormat.

Not wanting to do that just yet - any ideas.
I'm bald, but I still have a hairline fracture !!

See Doublespace/Drivespace and Windows 95. If you can get to the DOS prompt at boot (otherwise use a boot disk) check the DBLSPACE.INI file. If the Compressed Volume File is there (dblspace.000 or drvspace.000 depending on your version of Windows) the system should work. My guess is that the DBLSPACE.INI was not written correctly.
