    Question Suggestions for Ultra-Light Laptop

I'm looking for a laptop that is 1 spindle (i.e. no internal CD or floppy drive). I want to keep this under $1,000 and lower if possible. I'm basically looking for something that I can carry around the house or use when I go on vacation for my digital photos.

A Centrino isn't totally necessary... if I want to add wireless, I have no problem adding a PCMCIA card. I also don't have a problem buying used off eBay.

Anyone have something they currently use or that they've seen that will work for me?

Arrow What about an IBM Thinkpad

Hi I have an IBM Thinkpad, its not new but is really light and easy to chuck in a bag, one thing i will say is it can be a pain to upgrade or install new things into a laptop without a cdrom or disk, i have been having the same problem with mine but did manage to sort it out in the end.

They are really cheap too, if you want something just for docs and basic programs just get a second hand one off ebay.

If you want anymore info let me know

    PS. stay clear of dell

Thanks! I actually owned a Dell Inspiron 8000 a few years ago and had very few problems... but that was also when you called Dell tech. support and got some in the United States that actually spoke English as a first language.

I actually don't need anything with much power. I've started using my digital camera A LOT more and I want something that I can carry with me that will read a MMC/SD card. So, a built in reader would be a plus, but I already have a USB reader on my desktop. The other use is actually going to be using Remote Desktop to get into my 3 GHz box in another part of the house.

As long as I can get something with mobile chip that is above 1.2 GHz, I'm happy. I've got an extra full retail copy of Windows 2000 Pro. and Office 2000 Premium that are not being used that I can load myself. I also have an extra 20 GB laptop drive laying around from my old laptop.

IBM X31 is light at 1.6 kilo, 12" screen. I'm not sure about the pricing in your neck of the woods, but its got good grades from all kinds of places that matter.
