    Help, Modem Problem

When I attempt to dial the internet, I get error message : Error 602, The modem is being used by another dialup networking connection or another program. I just aquired this computer and it had about five versions of AOL installed on it. I uninstalled all and also did a search and deleted everything I could find with AOL in the file name. Could my problem be related to AOL? Any suggestions welcome.

Try using CTRL/ALT/DEL to end task on all running programs (except explorer and systray), then try dialing out again.

There may be a program, such as a fax receive program, running that isn't well mannered enough to release the modem when another program wants to use it.

Thanks clifh for your suggestion, I'll try any suggestions I receive. I tried to reinstall Windows 95 using the CD that came with the computer. No luck. I got as far as the menu giving me choices as to reformat the HD. THere was no Cursor to make selection with and the up down arrows would not work. I moved mouse everywhere but there was no Cursor. I then gave up on re installing the OS. I probaly will wind up carrying the computer to a shop for repair. Thanks again to all responders.

Thanks JAL for your response. Your info is good to know, I wasn't aware of that. I wound up carrying my computer to a friend woh runs a computer repair shop. He checked it throughly, even tried to reinstall the OS but nothing worked. He advised scrapping it which I did. Perhaps I can use some parts on another one in the future. Thanks again to all responders.

Thanks JAL for your kind offer.I really appreciate it. I had already scrapped the PC with Windows 95 when I received your kind offer. However I am working on another PC with Windows 98 on it. I have ordered a Modem and If I have problems installing it, I will be very glad to post a request for help. Thanks again for your kind offer.
