System Restore OEM #
I'm helping a close friend restore his old, (almost ancient) laptop machine to fuctionality. I had to use the AST System Restore CD-Rom to get things going.
However he no longer has the original documentation and is unable to supply the required code to satisfy the "Certificate of Authenticity". The machine was purchased by him, not stolen, and we are obviously not looking to do anything other than to restore his own machine to a working condition.
Is there any way to locate the required id#? Help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for looking...

If the drive has not yet been erased, you may be able to get the info from the Registry. See Getting the Product ID Number from your current Windows.
Look for:
"ProductId"="-xxxxx-OEM-xxxxxxx-xxxxx"
or with Windows 98
"ProductKey"="xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx"
Otherwise you are about at the mercy of Micro$oft.
