    Messenger

I use XP Home.Over the last couple of days I keep getting a pop up from Meesenger telling me that I have to upgrade my Messenger to the latest version.I already have the latest version but just to stop the pop ups I downloaded it again but I still get these mega annoying pop ups.The pop up says this...

    .NET Messenger Service Staff says:
You are running a version of messenger that requires an immediate security update. Please visit http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx to complete the update.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?Or what I have to do to stop this? This is driving me nuts!

    Thanks

I've got XP home as well & have the same annoying problem as well. I'm probably just going to get rid of ms messenger, I don't use it anyway.

"Shoot the Messenger" is meant to stop "Windows Messenger Service". It's not the same as "MSN Messenger". To disable MSN Messenger:

    1. Double click on the little icon in the system tray.
    2. When the program comes up, go to Tool/Options
    3. Click on the Preferences tab
    4. Uncheck the "Run this program when Windows starts"
    5.. Click OK

At the next reboot this program will not automatically run.

Or to get rid of the pesky thing altogether: Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Components and at the bottom of the list should be an entry for Windows Messenger. Just uncheck the box.

Thanks again. After installing Shoot the Messenger I got the dreaded pop up again and this time I went into tools I think and clicked to "Block the sender" and I haven't had it since.
If it comes back I'll do what you guys suggest and totally stop it at start up or uninstall it.I don't use it anyhow.
    Thanks again guys.

Go to Control Panel>Adiministrative tools>Service> and disable the messenger service.

    Also, download Messenger 6.0

    Hi Macnews,

I did everything the guys suggested and I am still getting the pop up.Now I've done what you suggest ie I've disabled messenger in the components box but do I really need to download version 6 now? What if I don't want or need messenger at all?
You'll have to bear with me a bit here because I'm not normally as deep into this stuff.

    Thanks again,

Doug Knox has a site with a lot of tips, tricks, fixes and small utilities for XP users. At his site, click "WinXP Fixes" in the left margin. About 2/3 of the way down the left column is one called, "Disable Windows XP Balloon Tips". Maybe this one will work for you.
