    ATI Message

    My OS is WIN2000 Professional. When I boot up, I am getting a warning window that says: "Failed to open registry handle in ATIPoll". Once I click OK, everything seems to start up okay, but this is not normal for my system.

    Changes I have made a few days ago are-- I installed:

    -MS03-026 for Worm Blaster
    -Trial version of ZoneAlarm
    -ViewSonic Monitor Driver Released on April 15 2002 (Microsoft listed it as a driver that should be updated--I purchased this monitor in July 2003)
    and
    Root Certificates Update

    I shut my system down completely for the weekend--and when I booted up today. . . well this is where I started my message . . .

    Any ideas, techies?

    Try re-install of DirectX and then the ATi video card/chip drivers.

    Thank you, Shimna, but how do I re-install DirectX and then the ATi video card/chip drivers? I'm a novice--please more details.

    Did you get the new monitor driver from M$?

    I don't let M$ update drivers for anything they didn't manufacture.

    ATI Problem

    I got a ViewSonic flat screen VA520 a few weeks ago. It is a great monitor. I installed the driver that came with it and it was still working fine. After the other recent installs from MS$ (as you call them--ha ha), it said there was a new driver for my ViewSonic, so I installed it too. That's when I started getting the ATI message. I am a novice, but is there a way I can undo that update, or reinstall the driver that came with the monitor and see if that resolves the problem?

    You should be able to roll back the driver from the device manager.

    Right click "my computer" then "manage" then open the device manager.

    Find your monitor in the right pane, right click and hit "properties" and open the driver tab. In there it'll give you the option to "roll back" the driver to the previous one.

    Thanks, it worked. I think I'll stick to manufacturer's driver updates for my hardware.

    Good idea.
    Note that it is not uncommon for updates provided via Microsoft to wreck a perfectly running system. It is not easily identify the source, since a large number of users have Automatic Udate enabled...
