    RPC Service Stopped

    Windows Xp Home machine.
    ------------------------------------
Just after booting the machine an error occurs with the RPC (Remote Procedure Call ) Service. It then tells you that the computer is going to shut down in 1 minute and you should save your material.

For the time being I disabled this service, however not knowing exactly what it does I am a bit concerned. Does anyone know what this does and what I need to do to fix this?

Download this patch and run anti-virus, Spybot and Ad-aware scans:

    Go to control panel>admin tools>services>RPC.

    On the recovery tab,

Change from "restart computer" to "restart service".
    I read your e-mail

Get the patch mentioned in DuaneB's post

This is the latest 'hack' out there due to a security flaw in Windows.

I've been reading these posts all day and tonight I got a call. client says.....my computers broke come fix it. lol It was this same problem. Does anyone know the file size for the fix? The computer in question will not stay online long enough to download the fix. Her connection is only 26,400kbps. And tomorrow I'm going out to fix computer. Thanks for posting the question.

photolady, You should be able to download the patch to a floppy on your Windows 98 machine. Make sure that you download the correct patch for the version of Windows that's on the machine that you're going to fix.

Thanks tufnuf. I thought it might work as long as I didn't try to install in on mine.

Sorry Duane, I should have said she's running XP HE.

FixBlast.exe (Symantec's worm removal tool) is only 173 KB. You can put this on a floppy also for use with the patch. Instructions for using it from a floppy are at the bottom of the page.

update: I put both the patch and the fixblast on two different floppies, then took them to each machine and all is well now.
