Go for the Sony DWU-10A it will read/write in both +RW & -RW formats. Here it is at my favourite online supplier (at the bottom) and you'll even get £12 change out of your budget

BAR NONE, the best DVD+RW out there is from NEC. Check out the user reviews from http://www.newegg.com. I don't have one yet, but there is no other DVD writer that I would even consider buying. It's only about $149 with FREE shipping, and has 5-star ratings from almost EVERYONE who has used it & reviewed it.

Walker2009, I'd wait a wile because apparently they're going to bring out a new DVD burner that can burn a huge amount of data per DVD disk. I can't remember the size exactly but it's much bigger than 4.5gb or whatever the limmit is at the moment. I found this out talking to a friend in MIRC once. I'll try and contact him again to find out the exact details..
But yeah maybe worth the wait if you want to fit more per disk.
Oh and copying movies even though its illegal it would be much easyer with the new drive because with the current drives you can't always do a perfect copy of DVD's. Most DVD movies are bigger in size than what DVD burners can do at the moment.

    Hope this helps.
    regards,
    Ian

Source: ThePC.info: Guide to Buying a DVD Player (last paragraph).
There's a new generation of DVD formats under construction. This format is called "Blu-ray Disc" and makes it possible to store almost six times as much information on one DVD than currently attainable. A single-layered disc will be able to store 27 GB, compared to today's 4.7 GB. A single-sided, dual-layered disc will have storage capacity of 50 GB. You'll be able to store 13 hours of film on one disc, compared to the 133 minutes you can store today. Today's DVD players will not be able to read this new format. It's called Blu-ray because it has a blue laser-beam, not the red one which is currently in use. The blue beam will be able to store more data than the red beam.
    Google search for "blu-ray"

its my understanding that -r has the best compatability with household dvd players averaging about 80%

while +r remains at about 20%

but the newer dvd players will read either
