I have a really weird problem!

    Hi all,
ever since i upgraded my pc mobo, cpu, gpu and soundcard i have had this really strange problem!

Each time the power is cut off totally from my pc (eg, plug out of socket) my pc wont run any games, 3d mark or anything to those effects at all for 3 hours or more! I have no trouble surfing at all just seems to be games etc.

I have noticed that when my pc is shut down and working correctly, my keyboard, mouse, external dsl modem and all other usb peripherals still seem to be powered, my mouse light stays on keyboard lights on and same with all other usb stuff seem to have power,

BUT when i get this problem all the peripherals seem to turn off with the pc!

I can only tell that my pc is working againg by the usb stuff which come back on again,

I know this problem is wierd and my head is gone over what it can be, im just stabbing in the dark to find out what the problem is, in hope that i can fix it

Btw i upgraded form 1800+, abit kx7333 mobo, 512 2100 ram, gf4 mx440, cmi 8738 soundcard, my new pc spec is in signature,
All upgrades was with full format so old drivers were erased.

Please any suggestions into what this problem can be, it is sending me up the wall

Sounds to me like a BIOS issue, you may try flashing the BIOS with the latest update.

    Cheers for the reply!
What suggests that this is a bios problem?
I have been reading up on this flashing and apparently it is quite difficult to do ( if u do not know what you are doing), and being relativly new to pc's i wouldnt trust myself to do it!

A BIOS has relation with the CPU, video, sound card and such.

    You've said...

While I've seen some of this before, a BIOS flash/update helped with it all. Your case may be different, that's why my guess was the BIOS.

Well a BIOS upgrade could be the answer...but...

I would check the connections of the motherboard to the case, did you use the cardboard type washer's with the screws? It sounds like maybe a short problem... Make sure all connections are good, reseat the cards, memory....

Also check your power management settings in your CMOS (SETUP) and within windows, not familiar with XP but probably in control pane..maybe it is set to go into standby to quickly or at the majic 3 hour point...

are you saying that if you cut power to your computer by unplugging it, and then plug it back in, and load windows, your USB devices and keyboard don't light up until windows has been running for three hours?

USB devices should still get some power when the PC is powered down, so being on after shutdown isn't a problem.

Do you have a fanbus? Or anything cooling related installed with the new hardware?

No what happenes is when my pc is working fine when i shut down, all my usb peripherials stay on!, ie mouse underlight keyboard lights etc
But when after compleatly remove all power from pc then plug back in and then shut down as normal all the usb go off but after three hours or so they will come back on! and only then will my pc run any games or 3d mark,

I have no trouble going onto the net when i have the problem!
it just wont run games etc

I am not running any cooling apart from case cooling that came with my Lian Pc 70, and stock cpu,gpu and mobo coolers

Another suggestion is to simply go into the BIOS (usually DEL or F2 on bootup) and check the powerdown setting to verify that it is actually shutting the computer off instead of going into hibernation or sleep mode. Also, check the settings for Wake on LAN or Wake on mouse/keyboard.

Also, check he power settings in the control panel. Make sure your HARD DISK is not set to power down at any time (set to Always on).

If you still have lights on the mouse and perhaps the computer, it isn't actually shutting down all the way.

(oh, and if the motherboard has an unused metal post under the USB connection, that might explain it too).
