Problem with passworded pc???

Hi all,
One of my friends has just bought an old pc, problem is it is passworded and the guy who he bought it from cannot remember the password as the pc belonged to his ex-wife (long story), anyway

Is there any way of dissabling the password or finding it out so he doesnt have to do a full format?
I have read a thread about this somewhere and im quite sure it can be done but i cant seem to retrace the thread?
Win 98 se btw!

(srry guys just realised i just posted in wrong thread and dont want to double post it should have been in Windows 98)

at the password prompt, he should be able to click cancel and windows will finish loading. Once in windows he can search for the password files and delete them. Then restart the PC and enter his own password or just click OK without a password to bypass the password box from then on.
Search for *.pwl and delete any that he finds.
