    TinyURL

    Hi Folks,

I was reading in a motherboard newsgroup last night. One of the posters there included a link of:

    http://tinyurl.com/8k0x

I'd never seen anything quite like that, and have since visited the TinyURL site and tried it out myself. Quite amazing!

How does this happen? Is this something that involves only temporary redirection and expires after a short time? Your insight would be appreciated!

    Happy Computing!

When I clicked the link I got the Gigabyte web site? That happens to be my motherboard?? Is that what you're referring to?

Yeah, it's just a database at the redirector site's end. Someone submits a link, and the site keeps track of that link and the code it returned (8k0x). By their nature those sites can't keep links around forever, but sometimes they're useful.

http://tinyurl.com/ isn't the only one - http://www.makeashorterlink.com/ is another that exists.

    It's very useful indeed!

I prefer Tinyurl.com, as it doesn't make you stare at its own site for a minute before finally redirecting you, like Makeashorterlink does.

Thanks a bunch for the replies, folks! I can see how this will come in handy from time to time.

Hey there, jmtjet! I was referring to my surprise at seeing that short URL that the user posted in that newsgroup, rather than the URL of:

    http://tw.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/...-A%20Ultra.htm

that I would have expected. BTW, that's also the board I'm using in my newest build here.
