HD Jumper Settings
I just ordered an 80 GB Maxtor HD and an external Firewire enclosure from Newegg.com. I already have two internal hard drives. I am not sure about how to set the jumper on the HD. I think it should be set as master as that is the only setting that appears to make any sense. Or maybe CS. Does anyone know for certain?
Thanks in advance.

Really, I think it depends on the inclosure as I have generally found CS. But some are master?
Although CS does make more sense though.

Thanks Train and Kjanx. HHHMMM! Now I am back to where I started - M, CS, or S.
Kjanx, all jumpers removed = slave. I don't think drive will "default" to anything.

Should have instructions with it, or rip the manufactors website apart under support till you find them. Send them a email, then they may send you the link to them.

Surely if you have two drives already set as Master and slave on an ide or scsi controller, then the next drive would be master on the second ide or scis controller.
If it is a third connector on the existing cable then my guess would be that it would be a slave.
ie a master can have many slaves, but all slaves belong to one master.
Thinking about that, it's strange terminology in this day and age. I thought slavery was abolished years ago.
PC (personal computer) jargon that is not very PC (politically correct).

Thanks Nix. Please re-read my post and note the word "external". In any event, I believe that I have it figured out. For external use master appears to be the ticket.

The problem was that I didn't put together the fact that the HD was to be used in the external enclosure.
