I have a Toshiba libretto 50CT Sub-notebook. And it has recently started to overheat, I can only use it for around 30-50 minutes before it gets REALLY hot and turns itself off.
I have tried changing the CPU speed to minimum, putting heatsink compound on the CPU, and everything in between, but to no avail.
Can someone please help me, or is it time to retire this laptop to the trashcan in the sky.
The specs are;
Pentium 75mhz
32MB of RAM
6GB hard drive
Win95b

I assume that you have had it apart since you mentioned heat sink compound. Did you happen to spot any fans in there? Some laptops have small fans in various locations to exhaust hot air. You might look for any vents in the case. Also, you might try running it with the case off to see if you can determine which component(s) are generating the excess heat. A Pentium 75 shouldn't generate that much heat.
jdc2000. There are no fans inside as everything just barely fits there . The only place where air could escape from is the PCMCIA slot on the side. This is a really small laptop, the reason I am so anxious to get it working properly again.
I also tried running it with the case off and the heat was comming from the heatsink, putting the laptop back together and within 30mins the whole laptop was getting really hot again.
Rececale. I will try the rain program, hopefully that works.
Any other suggestions would be also welcomed.

EDIT: Re-reading my post an idea came to mind, I noticed when I put the heatsink compound on that there is a little rubber like piece between the heatsink and the cpu. It looks a little ragged could that be anything??
If overheating problems are occurring in charging circuits on the Libretto 50CT, the AC adaptor could be at fault. On the Libretto 50CT, when changing adaptors either new or from other machines, do not use an AC adaptor (15V) which is rated more than 2 Amps. This could cause overheating in the charging circuits.
Rcecale, thanks for the link. But the problem isn't when it is charging it is when it is running from ac power, and the ac adaptor is the original that came from toshiba.
It only charges when the laptop is turned off.

Thankyou Rcecale and jdc2000 for your help. I installed the rain program that Rcecale gave me a link to and I am glad to say that over 3hrs later there is only a slight tempature.

It seems that I spoke too soon it has started to overheat after just 15mins now (even when on battery power), I think that it is time to jump on it, dump it in the trash and head on over to ebay.

Before you do anything rash, make sure the program is running. If you don't put it in the Start Up folder of your Start Menu, you would have to manually start it each time.
The rain program is running, I had put it into the startup. But it was still overheating. I will do a search for the waterfall program but somehow I don't think that it will do much good.
