    Beep Messages?

I just put another 256 Mg RAM in my wifes HP Pavilion 511n but instead of coming up it beeped1 paused beeped3 paused beep2 than acted like it was coming up but no monitor . Took it out tried to switch it to the other socket ,same results. The computer is running real slow but only has 128Mg in it and the system info is showing 100 of that being used without anything going on to speek of. She has a 40 gig HD and it is 2/3rds empty.
I ran Norton 2003 and found no problems other than a few registry errors and those are typical of Norton and are not a real problem anyway. The darn thing is not even a year old !it's a 1.3 celeron BTW(argg cant tell em anything! sigh)25 years married:0) sorry bout that
Any suggestions or explanations for the beeps would be much apreciated

Might check here for POST codes(on left) to find prob. It can be a crapshoot tho' cause it may be a proprietary bios...

I'd say that stick is not compatible with your computer.

Try www,crucial.com and see what they have to say. Just fill in the drop down boxes and get a answer. That is Micron's website. Good ram and is what i am using.

By the way, those type of errors range from can not boot to workd perfectly, it is those inbetween that drive us nuts.

well it is evidently bad memory 3 beeps and the others(beeps) were cyclical ( I did not wait long enough to really get it all)
This still does not explain why I am using 100Mg to just stay afloat on this computer. Is there a test that can tell if you are loosing memory (leaking)by chance or do you all think this computer is just using a normal amount of RAM and needs more period?
Thanks for the resonses and links. I have the correct memory just a bad chip.

    State OS in use.

    IF using Windows2000,
Use Task Manager... and look under Performance tab.
    Cheers.
