problem: two icons for the price of one
Hi !
I found you can have two icons on your desktop whenever you put just one shortcut on it. That's what happens to mine, but that's not what you might want and it isn't because I've had one too much. Can anyone please help get rid of those double icons?

This is usually the effect of playing in the Registry, by having the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" User Shell Folders Desktop's in the same location. Move one of them and all will be well.

Click the Start button, click the Run button type:-
REGEDIT
click OK.
When the Registry is open make your way down the left hand side to these two points:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
If the Desktop locations are exactly the same then one of them needs changing.
The default place for HKEY_CURRENT_USER is:-
%USERPROFILE%\Desktop
The default place for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE is:-
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop
