OK Times Up so:
Count Loius Zborowski built three Chitty Chitty Bang Bangs in the 1920's. With his mechanic Clive Gallop the shoehorned a 23 litre 300 bhp Maybach Zeppelin engine into a 75 hp Mercedes chassis for Chitty 1. The other cars were similar aero engined monsters.

He first tried to name it "Cascara Sagrada" (a herbal laxative - Count z had a sense of humour) but track officials at Brooklands rejected the name and Zborowski then caledl it "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" after the refrain from a ribald Royal Flying Corps ditty about leave passes (chitties) and subsequent dealings with Parisian call girls (bang bang). I have never been able to track down the complete lyrics and perhaps they are lost forever. Zborowski died in 1914 racing a 2 litre works Mercedes (not a Chitty). Chitty 1 was was sold to Parry Thomas and it became the famous "Babs" in which Thomas was killed while attempting a land speed record attempt in 1927 on the Pendine Sands. Ian Fleming saw Zborowski's Chiity as a child inspiring him to write the book on which the movie was based.
