Not crazy about WindowsME

Does anyone else have problems with Window ME being so slow when surfing the net? I have to wait until the modem stops making all that noise before I can go to the next web site or next function. Would it help if I did do something about increasing the speed of browsing the internet or is there something I can do to increase the speed. I miss my Windows98 alot! I can't take how it is so slow moving from one function to another. Thanks for any input!

Just a second here, you can hear the modem while online? Or does it quit and never make a sound again after dial up. You should not be hearing it at all while online.

Every time I go from one website to another or if I am at a website and go from one function to another is makes quite the racket. The light is on and it is like I can hear it trying to find it's way through the board to complete the task. What's wrong?

What modem do you have?
Internal (PCI/ISA) or external.

Are you sure it's not just the hard drive being accessed that's making the noise? It's probably just using the swap file on the hard drive. You need to install more RAM memory.

Some HDDs can be really noisy, but the noise is acutely different to that of a modem, I believe.

I have an EMachine or Etower600is with Intel inside. I bought it in Jan. 2001 and haven't used it since November 2001. Son went off to college with the good computer so I hooked this one up again. I don't think I need more memory as I really don't have a lot of files and folders. It is quiet now as I am typing but once I will click to post it will start in again with the noise. I didn't know if this was the norm for some computers. It is really slow compared to what I was using before. I guess I am use to doing at least two things at the same time but not with this computer. Just thought I would ask here first before I took it in to a computer shop. Thanks.

It could be a RAM question, and it could be your Hard drive.
One thing to check though is that you do not have too many programs running at start up.
Go into Windows Explorer and under Help chose About Windows.
What does it tell you regarding your system resources?
If they are around 60% or lower, you need to get rid of some programs that run at startup.
Let us know.

It could be a little box that says "disconnect after..." in you IE setup. I would look through all the options in IE "tools" section and see it something needs changing.

The memory being referred to is not how much space you have on your hard drive.
Do this: Open Windows Explorer, then click on Help on the toolbar. Then click on About Windows. A little window will pop up. On it will say:
Physical memory available to windows xxx.xx KB
Resource available xx% Free
This is what is needed to know. Click OK to close it, BTW.

Way too much running at startup.
You can uncheck the entries for Yahoo messenger, the MSMSGS (MS messenger), the loadqm (loads MS messenger background), pchealth (PC Help Scheduler, not needed but can be useful), cmesys.exe (adware, really slows down connection, definitely uncheck this one), both sointgr.exe (systray intregation for Star Office), ssdpsrv.exe (Universal Plug and Play for networks, opens port to internet, can be used to crash you)

Leave the ones for statemgr, both powerprof entries, taskmon, scanregw, mstask.exe, systray, Windows needs these.
The lexmark and lexstart is for your printer, you can leave them alone.
The cmesys.exe is the one really slowing down your surfing. It is almost constantly downloading ads for you to see and uploading info about your surfing habits.
There is a program call Adaware. It will get rid of cmesys.exe for you and it is free to download and to use. You can get it here:

I have only 49% free available. I went to yahoo messenger and msn messenger and disabled the start up feature. I downloaded the Adware. But as far as checking off those other things I don't need in start up I haven't been able to figure that one out. I can find start up but there is nothing to check or uncheck. And I can't get to that one web site Frebo. Thanks so far for all the help and advice you've given me.
