SPIDER - SPIDERBITE prob...

I've used the SPIDER 1.16 utility for a long time, but I've never come across this situation before.
After running SPIDER and initiating the SPIDERBITE, I'm now getting the following message:

"Sorry, but the hidden url cannot be removed!"

Try running Spider 3 times, restarting your computer each time.

I've had this happen a couple of times. What i did was remove and re-install it. And be sure to have all programs shut down before installing.

its just refering to the hidden url...
this dialogue box presents itself in place of the regular Siderbite box reading something like:
"the Spider has bitten; would you like to restart your computer?"

Ridgerunr - tried a few clean installs - no go

Rainbow32 - did as you said but no success - was I supposed to recite a little spell along with trying 3 times?

Nix - now THAT'S interesting, eh?!? I"d sure like to figure out what's up with that!!

I think the problem has something to do with this apparently NEW index.dat file (in a new folder):

c:\WINDOWS\History\History.IE5\MSHist012002071220020713\index.dat

Try moving the default location of the temp int files to anywhere else, and reboot. ( the originals will be deletable from within windows [or DOS])... then maybe the new one will work properly with spiderbite? You could then try moving them back to the original location to see if that's solved the problem.

fink's suggestion gives me an idea:

QUESTION:
Which folders/index.dat files wiould be recreated anew if they were successfully deleted (via dos, maybe?) such as:

c:\WINDOWS\History\History.IE5\MSHist012002071220020713
folder
and its
c:\WINDOWS\History\History.IE5\MSHist012002071220020713\index.dat
file

And maybe the tif floders too?
Can this be done and is it safe?
It seams to me that there's something not right about one or more of these folders.

The index.dat files will be recreated by windows if deleted. So will all the tif folders .. the ones with the long cypher like file names. But I'm not sure about the MShistxxx folder... maybe just rename that one in case it doesn't get recreated by the browser to cover yourself.

I'm not too familiar with dos commands - suggestions for what commands to use, please.

davey,

Go to Start/shutdown, and choose 'restart the computer in MS-DOS mode'.

Type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each one:

cd\
cd windows
smartdrv
deltree tempor~1
deltree history
deltree cookies

NOTE: Press Y if you are prompted to confirm any deletion

Type win (or 'exit') followed by clicking enter in order to return to Windows.

You will have deleted the History, Cookies, and Temp. Internet Files folders, including their index.dat files, and they will be recreated on reboot.

I did one thing possibly a bit hastily though:
I deleted C:/TEMP (jut through Windows Explorer) which was not recreated - maybe it will once I download something and choose "open from current location"?
If it is ot recreated, I dont know if I can just create a new folder named TEMP on the root of C:/, or if I have to extract it from CABs?

another question:
could I have included C:/WINDOWS/TEMP to that list:
like this-
cd\
cd windows
smartdrv
deltree TEMP
deltree tempor~1
deltree history
deltree cookies

I would leave TEMP out.

If it isn't recreated on its own then yes you can just make your own temp directory in windows by selecting "new- folder"

I'd deleted C:\TEMP through windows Explorer, it did not recreate, so I just created a new TEMP folder on the root of C.

My original problem:
"Sorry, but the hidden url cannot be removed!"
persists!
