I am trying to put a picture on a folder. Have right clicked and gone under properties to customize. It gives me a preview of the folder with pic on it, and I have applied and okay'ed the settings. Also placed folder in thumbnails view. But the folder still stays the same yellow without the pic. Thanks in advance
is this the case for just this one folder, or does it happen for all? Have you tried Refresh (F5) or View, Refresh?
btw, what does it show without custom picture when in thumbnail view? Default should be last four graphics modified...
considering the plethora of gui options in XP, could be a number of things. So check:
splorer, Tools, Folder Options... View tab.
Toggle "Do Not cache Thumbnails"
Toggle "Remember each folder's view settings"
Other options seem rather innocuous....
Some other things to consider:
How big/small is image file you are trying to use?
Is it in same dir/drive/PC? shouldn't be issue, but...
What is filetype of image are you trying to use?
Iffin you are caching thumbs, how big is "thumb.db", or whatever it is called?
Is folder shared? or shortcut to other folder? virtual folder?

warning, read no further if you are meek.
are you trying to either use image of folder, or one color image of color of folder icon (yellar)?

#1, The image you want to use is an .ico or a .jpg or .gif file? To use an .ico file as the folder image you will need to turn on the Icons view option instead of the Thumbnail option.
#2, The folder you want to customized is NOT the "My Document," or "My Picture," or "My Music," or "My Web" folder themselves. These "special" folders canNOT be customized (well, they can be but you'll need 3rd party softwares or modification to some system files.) Folders within these folders and other folders you created can be customized.
#3, If the folder that you want to customized do not contain any image files, you'll have to use the Icons view but not the Thumbnail view (and, therefore, have to use .ico files.)
#4, Try the XP "Album Thumbnail Generator" feature. Use a .jpg image; turn on the Thumbnail view; name it folder.jpg; put it the folder that you wanna customized. XP will automatically use it as the picture for that folder.
The file that I am trying to image onto the folder has been tried both as a .gif and .jpg file. The folder is a new one created on my desktop. It is about 4kb in size. I have tried F5 to refresh the desktop but still nothing. When I go under "Customize" for the folder, it allows me to restore defaults. The folder in their sample becomes yellow (original). I then add my pic, which it then appears in their sample, apply and ok the settings and refresh the desktop but still nada! I tried toggling both settings that were mentioned but still zip
Freedweed, I have both files in my self-created folder as folder.jpg and folder.gif. Neither work when each file is the only file in the folder either.
I have refreshed the desktop also. Does it matter what I use under Customize when it asks "Use This Folder as a Template"? I have tried it under all of the options and still not working.
Cueball, do I have to create the pic as an icon? I don't know how to do this.

me neither, throw me out for saying 'Thanks, that was helpful'. oops, I typed that.
BigTimeNovice,
here's what I did, quick and dirty... There exist better ways...
need graphic of folder. can find some good ones on web...
anyway, why bother,
used PSP4 (ancient, I know, but works for me) to image capture folder on desktop (xp allows you to use, basically any *.ico for the folder ico, btw...). Now I have image of folder, tweak away. Try to save as *.ico, PSP4, no doey, DOH! (bet, newer versions of PSP will do ICO). Saved as *.gif, instead.
Cueball, I have been able to create an .ico file out of the pic by changing it's file extension, but it still doesn't work. When I change the pic to the .ico file, it shows up again correctly in the preview but applying it does nothing. Also, when I try to change folder icons using this new .ico file, it says that the file (where my .ico file is stored) does not contain any .ico files. Weird! Here's the pic i'm trying to put on my folder. Thanks
Had to change it back to a jpg file b/c that's all vdr would let me attach

I, along with 99.9% of the regulars here would like to see you banned. Keep your thoughts to yourself, a@@hole.
Back to the topic at hand: Since there isn't a thumbnail preview option for desktop icons the method I gave will not work, but it does work on most other folders.
Try this, it is a *.ico file renamed to *jpg. Rename back and try.
Remember to create 'shortcut' to folder where you want to use this *.ico. If you need help doing this, post back. Use the attached *.ico as the icon for the shortcut, not the actual folder.
Ooops, no workey (not valid *.jpg, lol) , send me a PM, and I can email you the icon.
Icons are small, looks more like brown star on folder, but what the heck...
