    CPU mis-read by XP

I recently did a clean Install of XP Home

I have no particular problems but ....

I have an AMD Athlon 1.3GHz CPU and System Information gives it as 1009MHZ

I previously had Win ME installed and the CPU was correctly given by Sys.Info as 1333MHZ

Why the discrepancy and does it matter?

    Thanks

what does your BIOS say? (if you flash your BIOS or reset/change its settings it will sometimes not detect it properly)

    Thanks Rapmaster

The only change I made was to disable the L2 cache before Installation and then re-enabled it after.

    I've never Flashed the BIOS

Next time I Startup I'll look and see what it says about the CPU

Even if it was mis-read, that won't stop it functioning properly - or will it?

    Hi
    it shouldn't

bios and CPU work closely together.

was there any real need to disable L2?

"need" to disable it was an issue on win95 with some k6-2 CPU (early 98 could need it too).

yet, "want" to disable it could be real.
(when you get decoding errors while reading/extracting off DVD/CDROM drive one can disable DMA, or L2.

a "need" to do it points to timing errors.

my thinking is, if the real mode cannot cope, the advanced mode ain't ever gonna be stable

but, I had no such trouble on an AMD XP 1700, in a aopen mk77
    (which is a budget mobo)

Some of the ceterons and P II's have that problem. Forget the mobos involved and never could get them to boot with the L2 enabled with XP??? New mobos and cpus fixed them right up though.

    Hi train,
some msi mobo had a chipset issue
I was not aware it involved intel pii and the early cellie.
I know them early Amd did have an issue during win95 setup (one had to disable L2)

it would NOT surprise me if issues like these crop up again.

in modern mobo, timings are (as you must know) much, MUCH tighter.

couple years ago, one never thought there would be ATA 66 capable DVD drives
nowadays, during setup, they can be an issue
(in them drives I saw, jumper default is still ata 33. and yes, in one machine I saw decoding errors while DVD was set to ata 66. Rather than moving jumper, one can disable DMA mode in BIOS. However, I think ata 66 is just plain useless on DVD.
ata33 -w/i the default- is plenty quick for an ATAPI device... so, the jumper got back to ata33

    so, I asked
was there a "need" to disable L2?
and if yes, please tell us why?
(perhaps tell us where you read about it?)

The reason I disabled the L2 Cache before Installing was that I had tried several times and kept getting blue Stop errors

In the end I found out it was due to bad RAM - took one 256Mb stick out and all was well but left the L2 Cache disabled just as a precaution - re-enabled it after

XP working well - just curious about the 'wrong' CPU
