Operation Delta 3 - 004
We now continue:
Goose has been able to fdisk and format the 40GB harddrive. Now the problem is to get the darn Compaq QuickRecovery disk to install on the harddrive. There is no install or setup in the cd that we can find.
Any Ideas

Hi,
he has no SOS or emergency restore floppy?
also, bomide may need to be set up.
something I saw when I searched for mobo info came up in the other thread.
btw, the info I got was for UK versions, so goose should go to US support instead.
here is the excerpt...
Compaq Hard Disk Drives
A lot of Compaq hard disk drives are usually partitioned into two or three depending on their size. One or two DOS partitions and a small (12MB) non DOS partition.
This non DOS partition contains the BIOS setup utility and settings and other tools and is accessed by pressing F10 at start up when the cursor flashes in the top right corner of the screen.
this is probably absent on the new drive... so he has to create the floppies
The machine needs this partition information to run and so it is a good idea to make a back-up, particularly if you plan to "fiddle" with the hard drive at all.
A backup can be made using the "Create a Diagnostics Diskette" option from this very setup screen. It is very simple, two floppies are required (one labelled setup and the other labelled diagnostics) all instructions are given on screen and the process takes about 5 minutes. These disks are used to recreate the non DOS partition as below.
These disks are also available (in compressed a form) as sp7781.exe (Diagnostics) and sp2141.exe (Setup) from from the softpaq page.
MIND YOU, goose may need other softpacs
Creating Non DOS Partition
Boot from Setup disk sp2141.exe
Message states that there is no Diagnostics Partition, recommends there should be and gives the option to create one.
Accept this and you are prompted to reboot from the Diagnostics disk sp7781.exe.
Follow prompts to switch between Setup and Diagnostic disks several times, this takes about 5 mins.
EDIT>> this was as far as got on US site.
it has plenty updates, and drivers and such, but I did not find the restore Emergency rescue floppy. http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_list.asp

can it boot from the restore CDROM?
one has to hate these machines, and the softpaq update hell.
but, if it still boots, goose might be able to create the required floppies
another thought that may work;
he may be able to use ghost, and clone it drive to drive.

Hi Jaak, I'm up. Had made a Compaq Emergencey Recovery Disk that allowed me to install the two restore disks. They showed a couple of errors as I was installing. So reinstalled and got rid of a couple. Got more "stuff" to do but we're getting there. Lot of difference in the operation of this computer now. Need some sleep - more later.

It is up and running, actually flying, seems there is a difference between 4400 and 7200rpm. He is rightly proud, so watch it.
He had made the Compaq Emergency Boot disk so he was able to install the QuickRestore disks on the harddrive.

Good Evening All, I am back with a bigger, faster, motin gator mean computing machine. Ha, did you think it would be anything less with all the help I have had. All of you that helped - my undying thanks.
You know what my biggest problem was/ Fear of the F disking and formmating. Next was physically getting into my computer. As Bistro and Train always told me when I first started it is easy once you know a few rules to follow.
Another thing. Take it one step at a time and don't hurry. I had to format three times because of me.
Here are the stats. 32X64-133 256MB RAM, Pine CDROM 52X, and one of my 40GB WD HD.
Can't get into my G drive yet although it's there. CDROM drive is on H drive.
Long time ago, I had made a Compaq Recovery Disk (floppy)and it was this disk that let me access my two Compaq Restore disks. Had to reinsatll 4 times because of different errors. The WIN98 upgrade disk was installed twice. (cleaned the disk.
I have gotten more familiar with DOS commands as a result of this effort.
Bistro, thanks for you inputs. Brief, concise and to the point.
DrMDJ, Thanks to you also and now we get back to the building of BT.
Ridgerunr, I'm sorry. Maybe you should't leave.
Jaak, you're running commentary, although we couldn't communicate was great.
We shall see about hpkiller name.
Train, again thanks for changing over the post.
Medic, T-bolt, Sarkazztic, what can I say - you were there too. Noone can fail with the group of people we have on VirDr.
Daizy and the rest of you that are just getting your feet wet. All you have to do is ask questions and then jump in. I can personally guarantee you will not fail in anything you try to improve your computers.
Daizy, I need your HTML favorites again. I believe you said you had a "kabillion". And I have a hard drive to handle it.
Of course, as much as I had saved, I still lost a bit. Got to start reinstalling programs and such.

had we suspected a dying CDROM as well, what would we have done?
Personally, I could have taken a small excerpt out of that butter thingy I once posted, which actually also tests wether CDdrive reads in DOS/CDrom disk is damaged.
or posted a sumarry rewrite of the procedure.
(summary = in DOS, copy sth from CDromdrive to Hard-disk.)
I'd be basking in the grateful acknowledgement you posted, if only I knew what exactly it was what helped.

Jaak, You gave me certain DOS commands. The general commentary was similar to a road map. And various statments verified some of my thoughts. That's all, but it was important.
