Daizy's Boat Anchor
As I was getting extremely embarrassed to be poaching on greengoose1's thread http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For.../004875-2.html ....I'm going to try starting my own.
I'm trying to get thoughts/ opinions on whether to upgrade this computer, or build/ buy a new one.
Train...... what are you agreeing with bistro about? That I need a new mobo and cpu? Or just a cpu?
Daizy
And yes, I do only have a 4mb graphics card...but I have an AGP slot....won't that let me get a newer one?

Hope this helps.

How about a new computer.
Upgrade on the cpu and motherboard I agree with. Yes, but the present mobo seems to support a 800 P III. now that is no slouch, If the information I found on it was correct.
bistro
What about the mobo , you think it is a antique? Ur the Intel guy.

Daizy
Now.....about that handy dandy AGP slot?!

Hard to tell--perception is relative. To me? Yes. To Thomas Edison? A marvel of science.
What I read for the "A+" version was that it's capable of only up to 500mhz. I would consider a whole new upgrade. But I realize that there are other considerations here, such as money, budget, buckaroonies, expenditures, bank accounts, dollars, etc.. Have to consider all those factors...

If the A+ only goes to 500 then a upgrade would be in line. I keep finding the A(N) mobo.

Yes....and ironically enough......here in Canada..... loonies! (That's our two dollar coin btw)
Are you saying....or aren't ya...that changing out the motherboard AND cpu would be more expensive than buying/ building new?

Wanna know what my trusty manual says? Tough... I'm gonna tell ya anyhow!
It says.....and I quote:
MAXIMUM EXPANSION POTENTIAL:
The P6BX-A+ has seven free expansion slots. Two slots are available for 16-bit ISA cards, and 5 slots support 32-bit PCI card. (one PCI slot and one ISA slot are shared. You can install and ISA card or a PCI card, bot not both together.) In addition, there is an AGP slot for the optional istallation of an AGP graphics card.
HIGH PERFORMANCE PROCESSING
The processor Slot-1 (plus the retention module) supports the latest high-performance Pentium-II processors from Intel. The mainboard uses the latest 440BX Pentium-II support logic chips. This chipset aslo supports a 100 MHz host and memory bus.
Which means absolutely squat to me....but makes me feel really good about buying such fine equipment!

We established the fact you have a video card. Now what I am trying to find out if it is a PCI or AGP card that you have.
Agp card plug into the AGP slot
PCI video card should be plugged into the first PCI slot.
Yes, have a few loonies and claim to be also.

The chipset on these boards is different than what you list. Yet the second link is to GVC's web site.......go figure

That board appears to really be a GVC (or BCM) IN620 board. Not sure where the FR520 came from.
