AGP 4 or AGP 2 ?
I have a new MSI graphic card, Windows ME, Pentium III, a new motherboard. Display tab in configuration panel says it works with AGP 2 while it is able to work with AGP 4. Bios setup is set on AGP 4. How come I can't have AGP 4 ?
Thank you for any response.

Please clarify a few things:
#1: Which MSI graphic card? The nVidia family?
#2: Which chipsets is used for the mobo?
#3: I am not sure what "configuration panel" you are referring to.
#4: When you say, "Display tab in configuration panel says it works with AGP 2" does it actually report "AGP 2" (or AGP 2.0) or does it report AGP 2x. The reason I ask is that AGP 2 doesn't mean AGP 2x. AGP 2 (or AGP 2.0 rather) is the AGP specification which standardizes the AGP 4x speed. Likewise, AGP 1 (or AGP 1.0) is the AGP specification that standardizes AGP 1x and AGP 2x speeds. So I need to know which configuration panel you are looking at and what does it says exactly.

Thanks for your reply, JAL and Falcon 2000.
Falcon 2000, this is a very precise questionaire ! So here are the answers: The MSI cars is one of the NVidia family. The display setting panel says it is AGP revision n° 2.0, AGP traffic enable, 2X ,the 2 other boxes (1X and 4X) are not crossed, the box SBA enable either. The chipset is an Intel Pentium III with a 933 Mhz frequency.
Well, hopefully this will tell you something. Thanks for your help again.

Andre,
There's a few things going on here:
#1: The chipset I asked about is the motherboard chipsets not the CPU chip. But let's assume you have a VIA chipsets. If this is the case, then this is the deal. The VIA 4-in-1 driver set the AGP setting defaulted as 2x. Thus even 4x is enable in the BIOS it still won't be 4x. To change that run REGEDIT and look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VIAGART and change the data for turbo from "00 00" to "01 00".
#2: If it still doesn't work, there is another registry setting you'll need to change. It turns out that some nVidia drivers has AGP 4x disable by default. You can see the neccessary reg. changes or download a patch which does the changes for you at tweaktown.
#3: Even though nVidia put SBA as the spec. but it is actually not enabled by default. The only way you may be able to enable it as far as I know is to use PowerStrip (a free d/l.)

Thanks a lot, falcon2000 for your help.
I followed your 2nd advice and saw there is a patch to solve the problem. Everything's fine.
