SB PCI 128 digital output
Hi all, anyone know how to permanently enable digital output on this sound card?
as i can only get digital output to work when playing dvd's (via dvd software setting)...this seems such a waste of the output as it would be better if it was used for everything.
The main problem is when lead is in the shared line-out/digital-out the other built-in amplified out gets disabled meaning i only have sound on DVD's if i want to listen in dolby digital 5.1 format (without swapping cables).
The other prob is if i plug lead into shared line-out/digital-out then into digital amplifier this is fine untill i stop dvd, then the digital out turns into a line out and sends that into my amp digital input (not good)
The only way round this i can c is to only use normal line out all the time (including for DVD's)
But the sollution i'm looking for would solve all problems, digital output for all audio.
Thanx in advance for any advice. it would be greatly appreciated.

You might try that. Sometimes a question comes along that so specific, you just got to wait for someone with that specific knowledge to come along. I'm not too bright on this subject, but I seem to recall a thread where someone replied that the digital output on SB's was limited to CD only. Not sure though. I'm no audiophile...if it sounds like a chicken, it's a chicken and I'm satisfied with that. .

Its probably only digital out, because that is the only thing that is digital.

DVD is the only common thing that is dolby digital yeah, but any audio (WAV's & MP3's in plain stereo) can be played via digital output as its all digital audio files anyway but rather than use the PC Digital to Analogue converter i would prefer to use the one in my HiFi for better quality.
example: hifi separates cd players and minidisk players etc have digital outputs so does my other SB live 1024....they are all on permently for any music/sounds not just dolby digital.
Dolby Digital and the Digital output r 2 seperate things, (dolby digital 5.1 just so happens to come out of same output for obvious reasons)
The digital output is just a higher quality Line Output that bypasses the PC's D/A converter!
regards
