    Asus A7V vs.Promise ATA100-Conflict with Win98FE?

    Hi All,
Originaly i set this board up with a Quantum fireball,7200RPM, 20GIG as master and a Western Digital 5400RPM, 10.5GIG as slave using the standard IDE connectors. I upgraded my vid card to an ATI Radeon 64MB VIVO, my sound card to SB Live! Value and added 128Mb PC133 non buffered stick for a total of 256Mb of PC133 RAM.
I also decided to utilize the ATA100 feature and used the 40/80 cable. I set both drives jumpers to "cable select" and plugged the Quantum to the end(master)connector and the WD to the middle(slave) connector and used the Promise ATA100 primary connector for the HDD's on the board. My Plextor CD-RW and Pioneer DVD were mounted to the standard IDE primary connector on the board.
Went into BIOS and enabled the ATA100 feature.Booted to Quantums disc mgr. floppy and used easy install to fdisc/partition. Also used it to fdisc/partition the WD(although it warns that no guarantee on other mfg.'s discs, but have used it before with good results). Re-booted with Win98 boot disc(checked it first, all ok). Chose start with CD ROM support and began install of Win98FE.
This is where the "fun"? began. It got to the point of "copying Windows files" and stalled. This is the message that came up.
Message SUOO13: Setup cannot create files on your startup drive and cannot setup Windows98. If you have HPFS orNTFS you must create an MS-DOS boot partition. If you have LANtastic server(which i do not)or SuperStor Compression(which i do not),disable it before running setup. See Setup.txt on Setup disc one or the Windows98 compact disc.
After much thinking an' grumblin',,i moved the hard drives from the ATA100 connector to the IDE connector(left the 40/80 cable attached and Windoze setup just fine.
Could it be that Win98 doesn't recognize the ATA100 controller properly? And, now that i have windows installed, do you think i could move it back? I also, by the way "do" have the mass storage controller installed in device manager. But when this happened, i disabled it. Think i could enable it if i made the move? Would like to utilize the ATA100, but kinda spooked whether or not to try.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

First, slaving a 66 (WD) with a 100 hd will cause a slow down--both using the same channel (the 66 slows it down). If possible, use only the Quantum on the card.
Second, "Mass Storage Controller" in Device manager is an indication that Windows is NOT recognizing the Promise driver (should be "HPT ****, etc.") under SCSI controllers.
You should have a floppy that came with that card. Highlight the mass storage controller and, with the floppy inserted, elect to change the driver. It should straighten itself out and install the HPT driver in it's proper place.

Check that both hardisk are ATA66/100 compatible.
If both are set one as master and the other as slave.
Or get another 40/80 cable and set both as master.[what I would do]
If one is and the other is not, setup accordionly.

    Thanks guys,
bistro: Yes, they are both ATA66 compatible drives. And, i'm not using an SCSI card. It's the Promise ATA100 that's built onto the Asus board. And what i installed was the Promise controller from the board CD.It shows up in device mgr. as Promise mass storage controller, but "does" have an SCSI symbol there.

train: Yes, they are both compatible with ATA 66, I debated as to whether to use the cable select on the jumpers, but finally followed Quantums manual that said if an 40/80 cable was used, and the master was put on the cable "end" connector that the "cable" would make the proper selection.
I like your suggestion to get another 40/80 cable and set both as master on each ATA100 board connector. Do you think this would speed them up just a' tad?
Guess my main concern tho', was why Windoze gave me the run-around until i switched them to the IDE connector. Hmmm,,,but, as i said before, when they were switched, the install went through ok. Have you heard of anyone else having this problem trying to install Win98FE with an SCSI controlled HHD?
    Thanks again guys!

Also go to www.asus.com, find your board (same as I have and I love mine) You will see a link at the bottom of the board description page that should lead you to a download page for updated promise dirvers that resolve some compatability issues. Go get the cable too

My Promise card would not work with the Maxtor MaxBlast (EZ BIOS) overlay. Their FAQ said it is compatible with Partition Magic but not drive manufacturer’s overlay programs. I’m not familiar with Easy Install, but I suspect from your post it might be a Quantum overlay. If nothing else helps, try removing the Easy Install.

I might add that I actually used the Maxtor overlay to recognize a drive that was larger than what the MB would see. Your use as just a partitioning aid might not have any bearing on the problem, which is why I suggested removing it as a last resort.
