PnP will not detect modem

In a pentium machine and installing windows 95 it does not detect my modem.
I can add it manually and have disk from vendor. This seems to work until I do a diag. check, then an Error "can't open comm" yet the comm shows no conflicts and the modem shows no conflicts. Comm 2 is disabled in the BIOS.
The modem is a US robotics 56k Winmodem.
This modem was working befoe the user went and deleted part of the IOS and now after reloading windows95 from the beginning it just does not want to work at all.

If your modem is an external modem, then usally it runs on com 2 and you mouse runs on com 1.

The modem is internal and only a couple of months old.
Any other sugestions?

Try using the disk that came with the modem. You should be able to check the irq's for dos and then check windows to see if they match up. Remember to check Device Manager/computer properites, and look for any blue dots.

Hey have you looked at your modem it self, you might have some jumpers installed on your modem, if so that's why Win will not recognize it as a PnP. Remove the jumpers and it should work. Good luck

Win modems are software driven (ie all the software compression and protocols are run by a program using the cpu) and therefore won't operate without the proper software installed.

They also work only in windows, unless you can get an equivalent DOS software driver.

This said, windows 95 should still detect the modem on bootup, even without the software installed, and windows 95 may (usually does) have its own winmodem driver.

If you did a fresh install, I would suspect that you are missing some components in the dial up networking.

A) You will need your windows disk(s) for the following.

Please check in;
my computer/control panel/add/remove programs
and check what dial up networking accessories are installed.
- Double click on the dial up networking and uncheck it, click ok, then apply, then let windows remove the installed components. This will remove all the installed components.
- Go back to the dial up networking components and click on it twice, you should get a check mark with a white background, click ok, then apply again. This will install all the components.

Reboot and see if this helps.

B) Another thing is to try shutting OFF the PnP features in the bios (they will conflict with windows 95 plug and play routines.)

C) If you see COM2 in;
my computer/control panel/system/device manager
double click on it and choose "disable in this hardware profile"

Try each one of these one at a time. Don't forget to write down your original settings and change only one at a time.

If windows won't autodetect the modem, then it isn't likely to work (sorry.)

i also have the same modem and have had the same problem. mine works now but on com3. ,i had to disable auto settings and set settings to 100 & 5

Solved, Thanks...

But you know computers, they really do have a mind of their own.
Basically, I uninstalled anything to do with the modem and when I rebooted, Win95 found it this time. However I did have to change the comm port to com 4 even thou it defaulted to com3 which would conflict with the mouse.
