System Restore Fix

Has anyone downloaded the system Restore Fix for Sept 8th? Any problems with the install? Any problems with Sys. Rest. after the Fix?

No, I installed it quite some time ago -- in the spring, I believe -- and everything went easily and perfectly. It just replaces smgr.dll in the windows system.

But the article says that the problem will only arise to when trying to restore a point made after 7th September. It goes on to say

"A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem."

Today is only 2nd September - so, how come anyone has already installed the fix?

Yes, that's why I was asking, Microsoft's advice is somewhat ambiguous - at the download site it says " Download now to ensure that System Restore functions correctly" but in the article Q290700 it implies only download if you experience the problem.
So, to download before or after Sept8th, that is the quandary. I suppose either way one loses all one's previous restore points.
ME is so temperamental, I'm scared to do anything while the machine is working well!!

You want it short and sweet, or long and drawn out? If your smgr.dll file is less than version 4.9.3003 you will not be able to do a restore point after September 7, 2001. If you believe that your system will crash because you replace a file with an updated version of that file, then lots of luck to you! I am telling you that it will not. You should do the update now unless your version of Me had the newer version of that system file, which is unlikely, but check it.

I don't know Gerald.
In the KB Article it gives the attributes of the Fix file. The date Attribute is 3\2\01 which for we Brits means 3rd Feb. but for Microsoft probably means 2nd March. The date on my file is 21st Feb. My file size is the same as the Fix file. So, it's just the date of the file that leaves a ? in my mind.
It seems we're OK as long as our file is 'later than'. I imagine Chanter just left the 0's out. There's also a Time attribute which doesn't exactly correspond, even allowing for the time difference.
As far as I know, the version numbers work like the old Dewey decimal system ie the first number is the main one and then as they make minor alterations they increase the second number. When there's a major alteration then the main number increases and the second (and third if there is one)goes back to nought.
