where do we put the web server in a network?

Who do you want to hit the webserver? If you want it on the internet, the DMZ would be the best place for it(safest), but on the internal network would be ok if you have a good firewall in place.

It would all depend on your network setup, but typically just one, which plugs into your router/firewall. It needs to have a public IP address and be on a different logical subnet than your ISP connection.
