    Can't access network

I have a Win98 machine. "Client for Microsoft Networks" is the primary logon. I'm not attempting to authenticate to a domain. I'm using TCP/IP. I can ping another device on the network, but I can't use the "Find Computer" function to locate it, and when I try to open Network Neighborhood, "Entire Network" appears, but when I click on that I get a message that says that the network is not accessible

This is an excellent site to help troubleshoot some problems and make sure you're getting your network setup correctly:

Good luck and post if you're still having problems.

I've had troubles with win98 and network cards. I've found that the IRQ of the network cards needs to be the same or close in number to work. The conflicts are usually the modem card is using the IRQ that I need (or perhaps the soundcard). You need to remove the conflicting device, let window plug & play do it's thing and plug back the conflicting device for a new plug n play IRQ. Check the Start|settings|control panel|system|device manager to see the current settings.

It is very possible to have TCP/IP and no other networking services. Have you tried looking at the workgroup that you and the other computers are using. If there is no domain login then the other comps don't exactly know who you are. Set the workgroup to the same as the others and try the "net view" command at the MS prompt.
