My computer locks up when i give it alot to do

Im running win 98 se, if im converting files that take a while to do, the temp of my chip goes upto 42 and then my computer locks up completly. I say this as it has got a little worst lately and the ambient temps around here have gone up a bit. Im using a athlon 800 on a via m/board. Any help is appreciated

I know absolutely nothing about temperatures..... just that I have extra fans in my case.
Are you running too much at one time? When you do a ctrl/alt/del..... what do you have running in the background? Have you cleared out excessive programs from running at start up.... through msconfig? How much Ram do you have?

See? More questions than help....but this will bump you up to the top til someone that has better knowledge than I, comes along.

It sounds like you know your problem... Heat... I started having the same problem tonight, I had to lower the voltage anf the speed of my overclocked Athlon... You have less choices... Get a bigger heatsink and fan for the CPU... Get another case fan if possible... OR just take the side off your case for extra airflow... Oh yeah, take the heatsink off your CPU and add some heatsink grease, I'm not sure if it wears out, but everytime I overheat and do this it drops my temps about 20F...

Thanx for the replies, i have binned all the programs runinng in the background, even turn anti virus off. im using 128 mb ram and my chip is not overclocked, and i have a massive heatsink fan called a superorb. will try grease and a new fan on my case as there doesnt seem to be one.

Hi again, i have dropped my temps by about 7 deg and still it locks up. I have doubled my ram today to 256 mb. I have installed cpuidle and the chip had another 33% to go before it was maxed out. I'm using a via mobo with a amd 800 chip. thanx in advance

I would not assume this to be a heat issue. my first inclination is that a background application is causing the problem. Seen that one more times than I care to count

Do a ctrl-alt-del & count the number of items in the programs list. How many are there?

My guess is software. Seen it too many times where people load up 15-25 programs then they wonder why the system locks up.

Thanx for the replies guys, in the background i have poproxy, cpuidle, Norton anti-virus (disabled normally), systray, rnaapp, and winoldap. I have reformatted lately and still getting the same symptons

What motherboard do you have? Is it a Kt133 chipset?

While not exactly your problem the Kt133 chips have a problem locking up while coping files...

Norton AV or Norton Utilities?
What's winoldap? haven't used 98 in awhile ...

yes it is a kt133 chipset, i supose it is coping files as it's reading to and from the hd, i was using norton anti-virus. Im not sure what winoldap is but from what i read from that link the plus pack for win 95 got rid of that snag so i should hope win 98 se is sorted.

Hows your memory situation???
how much do you have?
via 4-1 drivers,do you have version 4.32?
Does your hardrive make lots of noises when working?
To use up all RAM before useing any virtual memory,
open system.ini
find the + for [386enh]
add a new line "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" no quotes.

i have 256 mb of ram pc 133, my hed doesnt make any noise at all. Will install the new 4 -1 drivers and se how i get on, thanx again for the replies
