Spyware usage

I have added Spyware. How do I know which files to delete each time I scan? Do I just delete all of them?

I'm afraid I don't quite understand your question, but I will take a stab at it. If by chance, you are referring to the "AdAware" program, here is what I do. I let Adaware delete everything it finds. However, the program that brought the spyware aboard may stop working. But in many cases there are alternative programs that perform the same function without spying on me.

If I have misunderstood what you were referring to, let us know.

Thanks Max. That pretty much answers my question. I have just a few weeks ago had a new hard drive and new memory card added to my comp, becaude my comp crased. I have been getting a IExplore invalid page fault in MSHTML.DLL when I'm browsing the net in different sites. I have rec'd a few suggestions. now just waiting to see if they fixed. I had read that this Ad ware program might help. Your thoughts.

Apart from the privacy issues involved with spyware, there is also the issue of stability. Much of the spyware out there will crash a browser sooner or later. Not real familiar with that particular DLL file you are getting errors for, but cleaning out this junk spyware couldn't hurt. Many people coming here with browser problems get the Virtual Doctor prescription of running Adaware. Most find that it helps. After you clean out your system, run for awhile and see if there is an improvement. If not, repost a question in one of the windows forums (Your OS) describing your problem. And we will take another look at it. Good luck.

PS...as part of the prescription, we also tell people to run a full virus scan as well. You just never know sometimes...

So what is the best way to get it off my machine? Can I go to find files and delete all the Asaware files there? I have a question about a thing called gator. I understand that Gator is whats used to put this program on a comp? is this right? if it is, should I delete these files?

The best way to remove spyware programs from your computer is to let the AdAware program do it for you. AdAware is just the tool you use to find and delete the spyware files. You do not want to delete the actual AdAware program. Just what it finds.

Gator is a program that is downloaded from the net which has a few things that it does to supposedly make browsing easier. The downside of Gator is that it also carries a spyware program that can cause problems. Have you ever downloaded Gator?

No I have never downloaded Gator. I have only had my computer bach a few weeks. I thought maybe Gator was connected with Adaware program. Should I delete all the Gator asscociated files? If so, whats the best wayto do this?

NO...Gator did not come along with AdAware. In fact adaware is designed to get rid of such things.

I just realized there is another post in windows98 about this. I'm going to pick this up in your other thread with Rog. It's easier for all if we stay together in one thread.
