If it's a Windows for Workgroups upgrade, and not just a 3.1 to 3.11 upgrade, you might want to go for it.

Windows for Workgroups adds 32-bit disk and file access, which improves performance greatly by keeping the CPU in protected mode for disk I/O rather than dropping to real mode. It's much like the Win95 method of 32-bit disk and file access. (Prior versions of Windows 3.1 access the hard drive in a manner similar to Win95's "MS-DOS Compatibility Mode".) WfW also includes integrated networking, Microsoft Mail, Microsoft Schedule+, Microsoft At Work PC Fax, and Microsoft's Remote Access Services, and other enhancements.

Windows 3.11 (non-WfW version) is simply Windows 3.1 plus additional video and printer drivers and a few bug fixes. There is no new functionality or performance improvements, features, etc.

Probably no more than what were included with Windows 3.1. But if the modem is Hayes compatible then it should still basically work. If it's a Winmodem or a PCI modem then any 3.x drivers for it would be included with the modem or available on the modem maker's website. Keep in mind that Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was released in November 1993. Any drivers it includes will be for antiquated hardware. At that time, there weren't even 28.8 modems, let alone 33.6 or 56K.

Once when I was installing IE for 3.x on a machine, the install found my modem 14.4 ISA and installed the drivers, set up my account, etc. A basic Internet Connection Wizard but in a 3.x format.

I had installed 3.11 WFW on that machine.

    AlericD,

Thanks! I try to be helpful (although sometimes I'm a bit snide about it), and it's always nice when someone notices.

I don't use it quite as much as I used to, for one thing, I play a lot of games so I use more "modern" systems for that. But I've kept the 386 since it was the first x86 CPU that allowed true multitasking, not just task-switching like the 286 and preceding CPU's. It's amazing how much you can do with one that some people might expect would require a Pentium or higher. Browse the web, get on IRC, send email, word process, play some games. You just have to be a bit more patient.

It is hard to part with that old thing-- it's slow by today's standards, but still useful.

And it sure keeps my DOS skills up!

Radio Shack has fans for 386/486 machines. They may be harder to find now but they are out there.

They never really got all that hot, running at 33 or 40MHz. That's not to say a fan/heatsink wouldn't be a bad idea, though.

Going from Windows 3.1 to Windows for Workgroups 3.1 is a higher step up than going from Windows 3.1 to Windows 3.11 (non-Workgroups.). Four dollars-- not bad!

As far as what the NT4.0 upgrade disc is looking for, you may need WindowsNT 3.51 to fullfill the "qualifying product" requirement.
